Do’s & Don’ts of Ice Covered Trees
I have seen tons of posts about down trees in San Antonio and they just reported that there are over 23,000 in Bexar County and the Hill Country area without power. Texas Tree Huggers wants to do our part and we want to help.
But some tips first.
I know it can be beautiful to look at, but stay away from your iced trees. They are very temperamental right now and could snap or fall on you at any point.
Do’s and Dont’s:
•Do not stand under an icy tree to prune a frozen branch. Clear away only limbs from smaller trees and shrubs that are easily accessible from a safe place and wear a helmet.
•Do not wet the tree in hopes of defrosting it, this will only create dangerous, slippery conditions.
•Don’t shake branches.
•Don’t use a broom or rake to try to knock ice off.
•Do not salt your trees or plants. This will damage the soil and the roots.
•Call the city about any limbs affecting public side walks, streets or power lines.
•Low hanging trees will likely bounce back when the freeze doesn’t last long, so it is best to wait a while to see if they recover. This, as long as they are not close to power lines or public areas. In this case always err on the side of caution and call the city for help.
